An evolutionarily conserved developmental pathway utilized during the differentiation of a wide variety of specialized tissue types in multicellular animals as diverse as nematodes and humans. Neurogenesis (nerve formation), hematopoiesis (the process by which the cellular elements of the blood are formed), apoptosis (programmed cell death), formation of somites (metameres, the successive subdivisions along the length of the body axis in bilaterally symmetrical animals), maintenance and proliferation of stem cells, and limb development are just a few of the cellular differentiation events that rely on cell-to-cell communication mediated by the Notch signaling mechanism.
