Obesity is an increasing epidemic in the United States and in many other countries worldwide. This increase in obesity has been attributed to a variety of causes, including poor diet choices, lack of exercise, and food-eating disorders. There is now, however, scientific evidence that microorganisms found in the intestinal microbiota (microbial flora) may actually play a role in the development of obesity. Many articles in the popular press are touting the benefits of “good bacteria” and the disadvantages of “bad bacteria” in terms of human health. The latest evidence indicates that these microbes may play a greater role in our overall health than previously understood.
