The mint species Mentha piperita in the family Lamiaceae (Labiatae). Peppermint (see illustration) is a sterile interspecific hybrid that is believed to have occurred in nature from the hybridization of fertile Mentha aquatica with fertile Mentha spicata. This aromatic herb is indigenous to wet, marshy soils along streams in Europe at northern latitudes of 40–55°. Overwintering stolons (runners, or leafless horizontal stems that root at the nodes) produce new plants, conferring a perennial habit to the species. See also: Lamiales
