A regulator of cellular lipid storage and the major surface coat protein of cytoplasmic lipid droplets. Perilipins (derived from the Greek words for “surrounding lipid”) are primary regulators of cellular lipid storage. The perilipins sequester lipids by protecting cytoplasmic lipid droplets (CLDs) from lipase action. Their relative protective nature and expression are adapted to the balance of lipid storage and utilization in specific cells.
