An interdisciplinary science focusing on aspects of the drug discovery process prior to testing the drug in humans, from early determination of a lead compound to structural optimization for drug delivery. Pharmaceutical chemistry informs many aspects of the preclinical drug discovery and development process to identify, synthesize, analyze, optimize, and test feasible drug candidates before they are administered to humans. The three requirements that all new drugs have to meet before they can be marketed are the following: (1) safety, (2) efficacy, and (3) purity. Through its interdisciplinary nature, pharmaceutical chemistry ensures all three requirements are thoroughly evaluated and tested.
