Producing electric power from otherwise wasted mechanical energy has created many new applications for piezoelectric materials, ranging from structural health monitoring of bridges and aircraft to powering wireless sensor networks. Wireless sensors have been used in a variety of applications such as surveillance, real-time data sharing, and condition-based monitoring of structures. Recent advances in piezoelectric materials and designs has made it possible to use piezoelectric generators as a self-sufficient, carefree power source for generating electric energy from the environment to power sensors, which can eliminate sensor batteries in remote or inaccessible places. These materials are able to produce electric energy from the vibrations available in structures such as aircraft, cars, bicycles, bridges, or in naturally occurring phenomena such as wind, water current, and waves.
