A low-growing perennial plant (genus Ananas) and its edible fruit, indigenous to the Americas. Pineapple is a succulent tropical plant cultivated for its fruit, which also goes by the name pineapple (see illustration). The cultivated varieties (cultivars) of pineapple belong to the species Ananas comosus (alternatively Ananas sativus) of the plant order Poales.
