An order of small arachnids that have pincerlike pedipalps as in scorpions, but that lack a long tail and sting; also known as Pseudoscorpiones or Chelonethida. Members of the order Pseudoscorpionida (Pseudoscorpiones or Chelonethida) are commonly known as pseudoscorpions (Figs. 1 and 2). The largest individuals have a body length of 10 mm (0.4 in.), with the smallest adults measuring less than 1 mm (0.04 in.). There are currently 460 genera and nearly 3600 species placed in 26 families. Some have venom glands in their chelal fingers (pincers). See also: Arachnida; Arthropoda; Toxin
