In science, remote sensing refers to the process of observing the Earth and other terrestrial planets and moons from above. It is used in many practical applications and day-to-day operations, including mapping, weather forecasting, and as an aid for measuring the state and trends of the environment. In order to deliver effective tools that meet the needs of researchers and professionals, remote sensing is continually evolving. Over the past several decades, major advances have occurred in sensor technology, software, and public access to remote sensing data. Yet the conventional remote sensing platforms, upon which most sensors are placed, have not changed considerably. Most remote sensing data is still acquired with manned aircraft and satellites, platforms that have several trade-offs for some applications in terms of their high cost and limited operational capacity. However, this may be changing with the relatively recent introduction of remote sensing with small unmanned aircraft systems (UASs).
