An order of flowering plants, division Magnoliophyta (Angiospermae), in the subclass Dilleniidae of the class Magnoliopsida (dicotyledons). The order Salicales consists of the single family Salicaceae, which contains approximately 350 species. There are only two genera, Salix (willow) and Populus (poplar and cottonwood), with the former being by far the larger genus. Members of the Salicales are dioecious, woody plants, with alternate, simple, stipulate leaves and much reduced flowers that are aggregated into catkins (see illustration). They have numerous ovules on parietal placentae in a compound, unilocular pistil, which ripens into a usually two-valved capsule. The mature seeds are plumose-hairy and are distributed by the wind.
