A former taxonomic group of protozoa (in the phylum Sarcomastigophora) in which movement involves protoplasmic flow, often with recognizable pseudopodia. Sarcodines were once assigned to the Sarcodina grouping. However, modern-day phylogenetic investigations have demonstrated that Sarcodina is not a monophyletic group, and the various sarcodine members have been assigned to other taxonomic groups, including Amoebozoa and Rhizaria. In general, sarcodine gametes may be flagellated, as in certain Foraminiferida. Most sarcodine species are floating or creeping; some, though, are sessile. The pellicle is thin, and the body is apt to be plastic unless restrained by skeletal structures. Sarcodines live in fresh, brackish, or salt waters; soil or sand; and as endoparasites in animals and plants. A group may be limited to a specific habitat, but many have a rather wide range.
