The world's navies continue to explore a wide variety of ship design types to meet an expanding set of mission requirements. At the same time, severe constraints are being imposed on procurement budgets and operating funds. Application of small, high-speed naval surface combatant ships for combat operations in littoral (shoreline) regions has seen increased emphasis in recent years, including the U.S. Navy's planned acquisition of the littoral combatant ship (LCS). Some key design considerations for such ships will be discussed, and examples of alternative hull forms will be highlighted.
