The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) fleet of heliophysics spacecraft and is the first mission in NASA's Living With a Star (LWS) program. The LWS program is NASA's contribution to the National Space Weather Program. The LWS mission's primary goal is to understand how the Sun changes and the effects of solar variability on life and society. Such understanding is necessary because we live on the Earth, which is embedded in the extended variable atmosphere of the Sun. LWS is a combination of science missions, engineering missions, and science investigations to both improve our understanding of the sources of space weather and be better able to develop space hardware that can survive space weather events.
