In 1998 a number of achievements highlighted both human space flight and automated space exploration and commercial utilization (Table 1). There were 77 successful launches, down from 85 in 1997 (Table 2). United States accomplishments included the successful conclusion of the joint shuttle/Mir program with Russia; the beginning of the assembly of the International Space Station (ISS) in Earth orbit; the second space voyage of 77-year-old senator John Glenn; the possible discovery of ice on the Moon; and surprising discoveries by the Hubble Space Telescope.
