Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic, degenerative joint disease that affects up to 40 million patients each year in Europe alone. OA is characterized clinically by joint stiffness, decreased mobility, and persistent pain. Although OA can affect any joint in the body, it preferentially targets the large joints and the finger joints, with the knee being the most commonly affected. The worldwide prevalence of OA is increasing and, coupled with aging of the population, is expected to increase by 40% by the year 2025.
