Surface combatants are required to operate in hostile environments. When underway, combatants are under the constant surveillance of arrays of passive and active sensing devices, designed to detect a range of signals generated or scattered by ships (signatures). The sensing devices are monitored by shipboard and land control centers that identify targets, range them, and direct forces against recognized threats, or activate weapons automatically upon detection. Hence, despite the reduced vulnerability of modern naval vessels to weapon-inflicted damage, deferred detection (reduced detection range) by design is the preferred strategy for increasing combatants' mission effectiveness. Submarines rely very heavily on covertness for their survivability and combat efficacy. The discussion herein is applicable to them as well.
