An enclosed space provided for the combustion of fuel to generate steam. The closure confines the products of combustion and is capable of withstanding the high temperatures developed and the pressures used. Its dimensions and geometry are adapted to the rate of heat release, to the type of fuel, and to the method of firing so as to promote complete burning of the combustible and suitable disposal of ash. In water-cooled furnaces the heat absorbed materially affects the temperature of gases at the furnace outlet and contributes directly to the generation of steam. See also: Steam
