A cable laid on the ocean floor to provide electric power. The demand for inexpensive, reliable, and clean electric power has been increasing steadily in recent years. This is particularly true for remote locations, such as islands and offshore platforms. Submarine power cables (SPCs) can connect those places to the onshore electric network. Islands that have been powered by local, small, inefficient power plants can now be supplied from shore with less expensive and more reliable electric power. Also, offshore oil and gas production platforms can draw benefits from a shore-based power supply. Onboard power generation occupies precious space and requires maintenance. A reliable, maintenance-free power supply from shore cuts costs and increases platform safety.
