The superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor (SQUIPT) is a hybrid superconducting interferometer. To achieve high sensitivity to magnetic flux, it exploits the phase dependence of the density of states of a metallic nanowire placed in contact with a superconductor. (The density of states is the physical quantity that refers to the number of states available to be occupied by electrons in the material, per unit energy at each energy and per unit volume.) The operation of a prototype structure based on this principle has recently been reported.
