The international price of oil per barrel has risen rapidly and has broken record levels. This results in high prices for gasoline and diesel fuel, and is a major reason for seeking alternative sources of transportation fuel, especially with potentially insecure supplies of imported petroleum. Other reasons include the environmental impacts of greenhouse gases, sulfur, heavy metals, and acid rain precursors emitted from burning fossil fuels. The production of alternative fuels from renewable lignocellulosic biomass from forest and agricultural growth and municipal solid waste is potentially a major means of alleviating the environmental impacts of fossil fuels, and there is hope for achieving this economically. One of the highest yielding methods for obtaining alternative fuels from biomass is through gasification and use of syngas (synthesis gas) to make diesel fuel, gasoline, jet fuel, or alcohols (although the capital costs are now high, this process should prove more sustainable and potentially more economical in the long term). As with transportation fuel, there is the same urgency for using more economical and environmentally benign fuels to generate power, and to provide heat for process energy in manufacturing and warmth for our comfort.
