The need for advanced and higher-brightness light sources (that is, sources of electromagnetic radiation, particularly x-rays) is well documented by the recent creation of new large facilities such as SOLEIL, DIAMOND, MAX IV, and ALBA as well as the upgrade of the older facilities. The applications of light sources encompass all aspects of science, spanning the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, material science, electronics, catalysis, and medicine. An option to provide “more light” to this research community is to develop small laboratory sources beyond the standard and rotating anode sources. Recently, there has been a lot of activity worldwide to develop such compact “table-top” synchrotron systems. The term “synchrotron” in “table-top synchrotron” or “compact synchrotron” refers either to the high-brilliance features of synchrotron installation (where the brilliance is a measure of performance that is defined below) or to the manner in which the electrons are accelerated and kept on their path. The different approaches that are currently followed are illustrated below.
