The study of the chemical reactions involved in the wet processing of textile materials by applying the principles of surface chemistry, fiber chemistry, dye chemistry, polymer chemistry, and organic chemistry to render textiles with desirable performance and functionality. In general, the wet processes of textiles include pretreatment, dyeing, printing, and finishing, and are based on the chemical nature of fibers, the fundamental component of textile materials. Because of the variety of fibers and variable process requirements, many different types of chemicals are used in a large amount of water—thus, the name “wet” processes. See also: Textile
