An order of flowering plants, division Magnoliophyta (Angiospermae), in the subclass Dilleniidae of the class Magnoliopsida (dicotyledons). The order Theales consists of about 17 families and more than 3500 species. The largest families include Clusiaceae, sometimes called Guttiferae (about 1600 species); Theaceae (about 600 species); Dipterocarpaceae (about 500 species); and Ochnaceae (about 600 species). In some recent classification revisions, the members of the Theales have been reassigned to other orders, including Ericales, Malpighiales, and Malvales.
