Subjective preference is regarded as a primitive response entailing judgments that steer an organism toward maintaining life to enhance its prospects for survival. Cerebral hemisphere specialization in the human brain may play an important role in the independent effects of temporal and spatial factors on preference. The scale values of subjective preference of both the sound field and the visual field have been described in terms of time and space. Accordingly, a generalized theory of environmental planning incorporating these values for the left and right cerebral hemispheres (Fig. 1), respectively, has been proposed by blending the built environment and nature. In particular, examples of temporal design associated with the left hemisphere will be discussed.
