Diseases and disturbances of the teeth and associated structures. Tooth disorders include abnormal formation and growth of the teeth and jaws, tooth decay (Fig. 1), inflammation of the tissues housing the roots of the teeth, and various diseases of the bones of the jaw. In general, tooth disorders are important because of their integral relationship to general body health, the essential role of the teeth in mastication and speech, and the contribution of normal dental function to the individual's psychological sense of well-being.
