An order of mammals containing a single living genus, Orycteropus, the aardvark. Aardvarks (Orycteropus afer) are the only extant species belonging to the order Tubulidentata. These nocturnal, insectivorous mammals occur in suitable habitats throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Along with the fossil members of the order Tubulidentata, they exhibit the results of an extreme adaptation for burrowing and feeding on small food items (particularly termites and ants).
