The vast majority of flows of interest in industrial, environmental, and biological systems are turbulent, and so turbulent mixing is a common phenomenon. One process of vital concern is the mixing and transport of pollutants released in inland and coastal waters and in the atmosphere. Turbulent mixing can also be a beneficial phenomenon, as in its application to create efficient and nonpolluting combustion systems and chemical reactors.
