The plant Brassica rapa (alternatively B. campestris var. rapa), a cool-season, hardy crucifer of Asiatic origin belonging to the order Capparales (Brassicales) and grown for its enlarged root and its foliage. The turnip plant (see illustration) is an annual when planted early, or a biennial if seeded late in the summer. Both the turnip root and the foliage (turnip greens or turnip tops) are edible and are eaten cooked as a vegetable. See also: Capparales; Horticultural crops
