The seventeenth-century Swedish Royal warship Vasa (Fig. 1) is the largest preserved maritime-archeological wooden object in the world. The ship is fascinating in many ways, being an artifact of marine and shipbuilding history. In particular, the chemistry taking place in the wood of the Vasa turns out to be spectacularly interesting. In the midst of being a piece of living history, a battle—one of a completely different kind than originally intended—is still raging within the ship. This chemical battle is tightly linked to the future of this Swedish national treasure.
