The process by which plant flowering is promoted by prolonged exposure to the cold of a typical winter. Vernalization evolved in certain plants to ensure that flowering occurred at the proper time of year. In some plants, the requirement for extended exposure to cold is absolute; that is, they will not flower until the proper duration of cold exposure has been perceived (Fig. 1). Other plants may exhibit a quantitative response; that is, flowering will eventually occur without vernalization, but flowering is greatly accelerated by cold exposure.
