An astronomical telescope facility located in the Atacama Desert in Chile. Operated by the European Southern Observatory, the Very Large Telescope (VLT) is used to study a wide range of astronomical phenomena in optical and infrared light. Its constituent telescopes offer among the greatest collecting area and the highest angular resolving power of any ground-based instrument in the world (Fig. 1).
