In 2013, 31 people in Florida were infected by a saltwater bacterial pathogen known as Vibrio vulnificus. This species is a rare cause of flesh-eating disease, which in medical terms is called necrotizing fasciitis. Of the 31 people infected in 2013, nine died from their disease.
