Wave slamming occurs when a ship operating in a seaway is subjected to forces due to the presence of ocean waves. For most of a ship's life, these forces (typically referred to as ordinary wave-induced loads) will be of low to moderate magnitude. However, when a ship travels at high speed in moderately high seas or when operating in heavy seas, these hydrodynamic forces, in conjunction with the ship's own rigid-body motions, can cause the ship's bow to come out of the water (Fig. 1a).
