A shrubby, deciduous plant of the genus Ribes in the family Grossulariaceae and its edible fruit, a berry, which is borne in clusters on the plant. Cultivated red and black currants (Fig. 1) and gooseberries all belong to the Ribes genus (order Saxifragales or Rosales, depending on the classification system). Ribes species that have prickles or spines are called gooseberries and those that do not have prickles or spines are called currants.
