An order of flowering plants near the base of the eudicots. The exact relationship of the order Saxifragales to other plant orders is still under investigation, and DNA sequence analyses have indicated that the order includes few families that have been associated together in previous classifications. In general, members of the Saxifragales appear to be related to the rosid eudicots. The order Saxifragales includes 13 small to moderately sized families and perhaps approximately 2300 species. There are two categories: (1) woody species that are sometimes wind-pollinated, and (2) insect-pollinated herbs. The members are difficult to characterize morphologically, but they fall into several sets of families that have been considered closely related by most researchers.
