Any member of the extinct mammalian subfamily Glyptodontinae, comprising giant, heavily armored relatives of armadillos. The extinct prehistoric creatures known as glyptodonts (whose name is derived from the Greek term for "grooved tooth") [Fig. 1] inhabited mainly South America, with one lineage reaching North America. These mammals lived from approximately 45 million years ago until 10,000 years ago, during part of the Cenozoic Era (which began about 66 million years ago and continues into the present).
