The common name for any of 18 or 19 species of rodents in the family Cricetidae, subfamily Cricetinae, characterized by scent glands in the flanks, large cheek pouches, and a short tail. The natural range of most hamster species is Asia, but a few, such as the common hamster (Cricetus cricetus), are found in Europe. See also: Rodentia
