Pathologies or aberrations in structure or function of blood cells or the blood-clotting mechanism. Hematologic disorders affect the blood and blood-forming organs. Although many diseases and abnormal conditions may be reflected by the blood and its constituents, the abnormalities of red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), platelets, and clotting factors are considered to be the primary hematologic disorders. Notable disorders include rare genetic diseases, cancers (especially leukemias), anemias (Fig. 1), polycythemias, and hemorrhagic conditions. See also: Blood; Blood vessel; Cancer
