One of the viruses responsible for causing hepatitis (inflammation of the liver). Hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is a member of the genus Hepacivirus, remains a leading cause of chronic liver disease (Fig. 1). According to the World Health Organization, more than 170 million individuals are infected by HCV, and approximately 71 million persons have chronic infection. Both acute and chronic forms of hepatitis are caused by HCV. In addition, other liver conditions have been attributed to HCV, including liver cirrhosis, liver failures, and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCV also is the leading indication for liver transplantation. There is no vaccine to combat HCV.
