A chemical element, Ir, atomic number 77, relative atomic weight 192.22. Iridium is a transition metal and shares similarities with rhodium as well as the other platinum metals, including palladium, platinum, ruthenium, and osmium. The atom in the gas phase has the electronic configuration 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 3d10, 4s2, 4p6 4d10, 4f14, 5s2, 5p6, 5d7, 6s2. The ionic radius for Ir3+ is 0.068 nanometer and its metallic radius is 0.1357 nm. Metallic iridium is slightly less dense than osmium, which is the densest of all the elements.
