A type of transportation system that uses magnetic forces to levitate vehicles above a dedicated guideway. Magnetic levitation is also known as maglev. Typically, maglev vehicles are magnetically guided and propelled. Maglev has been a niche form of transportation to date (Fig. 1), though the technology continues to attract considerable interest and investment. See also: Magnet; Magnetism
