An emerging cancer therapy in which oncolytic viruses are used to target and destroy cancer cells without harming healthy cells. Oncolytic viruses (that is, viruses that destroy cancer cells, but not normal cells) are able to infect, replicate inside of, and kill cancer cells through diverse mechanisms. The viral infection also stimulates the body's immune system to eliminate the infected cancer cells, potentially causing malignant tumors to shrink. As such, oncolytic virotherapy or oncolytic virus therapy holds great potential as a prominent tool to combat cancer (see illustration). See also: Cancer; Cell (biology); Oncology; Tumor; Virus
