A material useful for the mitigation, control, or elimination of plants or animals detrimental to human health or economy. Pesticides are formulated products that contain both active and inert ingredients. The active ingredients are the effective chemical compounds. Inert ingredients are included to aid in the application and stability of the products (see illustration). Examples of inert ingredients include solvents, stabilizers, and surfactants, to name a few. New and existing pesticides must be evaluated for their potential human and ecological effects.
