The generation, detection, and application of radiation in the submillimeter-wave region of the electromagnetic spectrum. In practical terms, this region corresponds to wavelengths between about 30 micrometers and 3 millimeters (Fig. 1). At its extremes the region overlaps with the microwave and infrared, and a unique feature is that the distinct propagation methods of these adjacent regions, guided-wave and free-space propagation, are used throughout it.
