Pathological conditions affecting skeletal (voluntary) muscles. The muscular system comprises the set of anatomical structures (muscle cells, contractile elements, and associated connective tissues) that are responsible for body movements in vertebrates. Pathological conditions or diseases of the muscular system can vary in their severity and longevity, and the origin of these disorders can involve congenital, acquired, or metabolic factors. Traumatic injuries are often involved as well. In addition, the proper functioning of other organ systems, such as the nervous system (Fig. 1) and endocrine system, and variations in the concentration of various electrolytes may affect muscle function.
