A spacecraft that has probed the Sun’s internal structure, its outer atmosphere, and the origin of the solar wind. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), a project of international cooperation between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), was launched on December 2, 1995, and began full scientific operation on February 14, 1996. Although only intended as a two-year mission, the SOHO spacecraft has maintained its operational status and continues to study the Sun (Fig. 1.)
